Tourism Leadership Chair Steps Up

The Aotea Destination Management group met on Friday 3 May in person and online. This was the first session to bring the new group together. We are fortunate to have a variety of skills and experience on board.

We are pleased to announce that Jason Elliott has stepped up to be the Chairperson (Independent) and Chris Ollivier will stay on as local board representative.

“My background is in Civil Engineering and Finance. I have worked in the liquor industry in a financial capacity for five years where I worked both locally and abroad in businesses in Cambodia and Sri Lanka. I now work in professional services, supporting merger and acquisition activity in New Zealand. This combined experience lends to a solid understanding of infrastructure and financing which I am hoping to apply here to help Aotea become future ready.

I have holidayed on the Barrier for many years and have recently bought a property on the island which I am restoring ecologically. It’s a special place and I am keen to do my bit to ensure it can effectively walk the line between being a thriving and liveable community and exploitation.”

The next steps for the group are to define our goals, using the Destination Management Plan as our guiding document. We can then look at the requirements of an Aotea Destination Management office to bring those goals to life over the next 12 months.

The Terms of Reference and mission statement of the group will be shared with the community in due course. We require a part time admin person to assist us – we are seeking expressions of interest for this role.
